In a span of 17 seasons, from 1965 through 1981, USC produced four Heisman Trophy-winning running backs plus other running backs who left a permanent imprint on the sport: Sam Cunningham against Alabama in 1970, Anthony Davis’s iconic 1974 game against Notre Dame, Ricky Bell carrying John Robinson to the Rose Bowl in his first season as USC head coach in 1976. Through the early 1980s, however, college football belonged to the running back, and USC was at the forefront of that reality. Modern college football has become a quarterback’s game, given the pass-first nature of the sport in the 21st century.
